Monthly Newsletter: Gratitude
Hi there Tabitha,
Here is your monthly newsletter. I hope you find valuable information to help you create Your Best Life!
On A Personal note:
One of the things I love to do is work on my pond. As fall approaches the leaves will start to blow into the pond and the plants will start to die. I will clean up as much as possible before it freezes. When we got our dog Sandi as a puppy she spent a lot of time that spring with me at and in our pond. Now she loves to chase frogs in the pond. Dogzilla as we call her! As she stomps through the pond she is sometimes rough on our plants. The joy she get is contagious so it's hard to give her a hard time. Look at her tail just a waging. Lol. We spend a lot of time on our deck enjoying the relaxing sound of the waterfalls and watching the goldfish. I find it's the best way to wind down at the end of the day or to relax with a cup of coffee in the morning. Sometimes I sit here to journal about the things that I feel grateful about. A daily practice that I have. I find that it helps keep me aware of the wonderful things in my life. So I wanted to share with you some information on Gratitude. Today's Article:
Accessing the Power of Gratitude
The practice of gratitude as a tool for happiness has been in the mainstream for years. It's one of the practices that I personally love. There are long-term studies that support gratitude’s effectiveness, suggesting that a positive, appreciative attitude contributes to greater success in work, greater health, peak performance in sports and business, a higher sense of well-being, and a faster rate of recovery from surgery or other set backs in life.
While we may acknowledge gratitude's many benefits, it still can be difficult to sustain. So many of us are trained to notice what is broken, undone or lacking in our lives. And for gratitude to meet its full healing potential in our lives, it needs to become more than just a Thanksgiving word. We have to learn a new way of looking at things, a new habit. And that can take some time.
Even after the habit has been established it's easy to stop doing it again when life (other things) get in the way. I find after I stop doing my gratitude journal for a while my happiness level drops and I find it harder to recover from disappointment. So I always come back to it. It feels good to recognize my blessings.
That's why I find practicing gratitude makes so much sense for me. I hope you will try it and find that too!
When we practice giving thanks for all we have, instead of complaining about what we lack, we give ourselves the chance to see all of life as an opportunity and a blessing.
Remember that gratitude isn't a blindly optimistic approach in which the bad things in life are whitewashed or ignored. It's more a matter of where we put our focus and attention. Pain and injustice exist in this world, but when we focus on the gifts of life, we gain a feeling of well-being. Gratitude balances us and gives us hope.
There are many things to be grateful for: colorful autumn leaves, legs that work, friends who listen and really hear, chocolate, mmm, I love Chocolate, fresh eggs, warm jackets, tomatoes, the ability to read, roses, our health, butterflies. What's on your list? I would love if you would reply to this email and share a few of the things you're grateful for!
I love to notice the moments, like when I almost drop my coffee but was able to catch it without wearing it, or the beauty of the night sky filled with bright beautiful starts lighting the sky, or my granddaughter and the crazy things she does, or that I seen a friend at the store that I hadn't seen in a while and we had a nice chat...
Some Ways to Practice Gratitude
Keep a gratitude journal in which you list things for which you are thankful. You can make daily, weekly or monthly lists. Greater frequency may be better for creating a new habit, but just keeping that journal where you can see it will remind you to think in a grateful way.
- Make a gratitude collage by drawing or pasting pictures.
- Practice gratitude around the dinner table or make it part of your nighttime routine.
- Make a game of finding the hidden blessing in a challenging situation.
- When you feel like complaining, make a gratitude list instead. You may be amazed by how much better you feel.
- Notice how gratitude is impacting your life. Write about it, sing about it, express thanks for gratitude.
As you practice, an inner shift begins to occur, and you may be delighted to discover how content and hopeful you are feeling. That sense of fulfillment is gratitude at work.
